De brillation in models of cardiac muscle
نویسنده
چکیده
The propagation of electrical activity in cardiac tissue can be modelled by reaction diiusion equations, where a tensor of diiusion coeecients represents anisotropy due to bre orientation, and excitation is represented by high order, stii diierential systems. The eeects of external electrical stimulation, as in artiical pacemakers, or in deebrillators, requires bidomain models, in which intra-and ex-tracellular currents are treated separately. Simpliied approaches are taken to this problem to illustrate two methods of deebrillation; by a single large pulse, that eliminates all propagating activity, and by a series of smaller amplitude perturbations, that drive out re-entrant sources of excitation. Ventricular ̄ brillation : evolution of the multiple - wavelet hypothesis
Every heartbeat is preceded by an electrical wave of excitation that rapidly propagates through the cardiac muscle, triggering mechanical contractions of cardiac myocytes. Abnormal propagation of this wave causes severe cardiac arrhythmias. The most dangerous of these is ventricular brillation, the leading cause of sudden death in the industrialized world. It is well established that ventricu...

Presented here is an ecient algorithm for solving the bidomain equations describing myocardial tissue with active membrane kinetics. An analysis of the accuracy shows advantages of this numerical technique over other simple and therefore popular approaches. The modular structure of the algorithm provides the critical ̄exibility needed in simulation studies: ®ber orientation and membrane kineti...

Objectives: To prevent death from atrial ®brillation, a cardiac disease which kills by producing emboli. Atrial ®brillation causes about 25% of strokes and increases stroke rate by ®ve times. Over 90% of these embolic strokes are from clots originating in the left atrial appendage. This study addresses the surgical feasibility of removing the appendage to prevent future deaths in two subcategor...
متن کاملAnode / Cathode Make and Break Phenomena in aModel of De brillation 1
The goal of this simulation study is to examine, in a sheet of myocardium, the contribution of anode and cathode break phenomena in terminating a spiral wave reentry by the de brillation shock. The tissue is represented as a homogeneous bidomain with unequal anisotropy ratios. Two case studies are presented in this article: tissue that can electroporate at high levels of transmembrane potential...
متن کاملChanges in vascular reactivity of the coronary artery and thoracic aorta in the delta sarcoglycan null mutant mice
Introduction: Mutations in the delta sarcoglycan gene (d-SG) cause limb-girdle muscular dystrophy type 2F with structural and functional alterations in cardiac, smooth and skeletal muscle. The objective of the present study was to improve information about changes in vascular reactivity of the thoracic aorta and the coronary artery in the perfused heart of the d-SG-null mutant mouse model. ...
